The Original Silent Dog Whistle
Designed over a hundred years ago and still blowing strong
Mentioned in Sir Francis Gaulton’s book “Inquiries into Human Faculty and its Development” (published 1876), the original silent dog whistle was created to test audible frequencies for both humans and animals.
Gaulton, a celebrated anthropologist, eugenicist, explorer and inventor, would earn a knighthood for his contribution to humanity, including this useful device. It is silent because to our ears, it merely hisses when you blow.
But to an attentive hound, finely-tuned to listen for our call, it’s the sound of great things to come. Or possibly dinnertime.
Also makes a great looking conversation piece for the history-inclined.
The ACME Whistle Company is the oldest English whistle company still in existence. Founded in 1884 by Joseph Hudson, they have produced some of the most recognisable sounds of the past 135 years. Read more about them here.
